This is the Day Which God Has Made

This meditation is based on a passage for April 7, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Psalm 118

Reflection and Question: The opening and closing verses of this psalm shout out one of the consistent themes of this poetry: “O give thanks to God, for God is good; God’s steadfast love endures forever!” It is triumphant when victory is achieved and things are good; it is a statement of faith when hard times inevitably hit us all. A great gift of my youth was that verse 24 was repeated every Sunday at summer camp by my favorite counselor: “This is the day that God has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” How does your day go when you begin the day with thanks and joy?

Prayer: This is the day the Lord hath made; he calls the hours his own.
Let heaven rejoice, let earth be glad, and peace surround the throne. Amen.
